‘The year 1999 wouldn’t have been a spectacular year in most of the countries in the world. but it was full with excitement for Turkish public. and it was an extraordinary year for those who follow developments in Turkey closely. Fehmi Koru. as a Turk who makes his living as a journalist writing both for a Turkish paper as well as for Turkish Daily Nes. one and only English language paper in the country. took double thrill.He was meeting and discussing the events with politicians and bureaucrats during the day. and exchangin pleasantries with foreign diplomats and dignitaries at nightly receptions.This has been the first collection of articles by a Turkish journalist in English and it chronicles the events of that fateful year:1999’

Who is Koru?
Turkish journalist. Studied theologyand journalism. received his master’s degree from the Center for Middle Eastern Studies of Harvard University. Worked as a research affiliate at the Center for International Studies of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Edited daily Milli Gazete (1984) and Zaman (1986-1987). was the chief editorial writer and Ankara Bureau Chief of Zaman until 1998. He has been with daily Yeni Safak since the beginning of 1999. He also wrote for Turkish Daily News (1998-2000).
His journalistic work has been published in five books. ill in Turkish. His article ‘Democracy and Islam: The Turkish Experiment’ came out in Sept/Oct 1996 issue of ‘Muslim Politics Report’ of Council on Foreign Relations.
‘ONE COULMN AHEAD’. which is printed in English and soft cover. is consisting of 334 pages and representing the insight of the leading events that took place in 1999 in Turkey.
